LASER HAIR REMOVAL

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

Laser hair removal removes unwanted hair permanently by targeting and damaging the root of the hair. The laser itself is attracted to pigment or colour. Assuming there is a good contrast between the skin and the hair, the laser damages the root and leaves behind a small stem. Over the next 2-3 weeks, it will appear as if the hairs are growing when actually the skin is naturally pushing this stem up and out. If you were to pull at these hairs with your fingers (not tweezers) 2-3 weeks after the treatment these hairs slide out with no resistance at all. Once these hairs fall out there will be a period where there is very little hair. With a new cycle of hair growth approximately 6 to 8 weeks for the body and 4 to 6 weeks for the face, you would be coming in for your next treatment.

The reason why you would require more than one treatment is there are different cycles of hair growth. Ideally, we want to be able to attack the hair during the active stage of hair growth (anagen stage) which is when the hair follicle has a full root. Because we don’t know which hairs are in right stage at one time, that is the only reason why you would need more than one treatment. Normally 5-7 treatments are required for best results. Prior to commencing any hair removal program, we recommend coming in for a complimentary consultation so we may assess the area of interest. At this time, we will be able to determine whether you are a good candidate or not based on your hair and skin type. We do have multiple lasers for hair removal, which guarantees effective and safe treatments for ALL skin types!

LASER HAIR REMOVAL FOR ALL SKIN TYPES:
HOW DOES BELLAIR LASER DIFFER FROM OTHER LASER CLINICS?

We use multiple lasers for eliminating unwanted hair with laser hair removal. There are different technologies available for hair removal:

Diode Lasers: The Diode laser is considered the best hair removal technology for all skin types except for darker brown skins and black skins. A diode laser has a wavelength of 810nm which is fantastic for attracting melanin in the hair follicle since this laser travels a little further down the hair shaft in comparison to a Alexandrite system. This longer wavelength allows for increased epidermal safety. The Lightsheer diode laser for hair removal is the best diode laser available since the system has a built in cooling system. This cooling system allows for increased effectiveness by providing contact cooling with every pulse. The Lightsheer is considered the “Gold Standard” for hair removal

Nd Yag: An Nd Yag laser has a wavelength 1064nm. This laser is the safest and most effective laser for all skin types, especially dark skins. An Nd Yag system has the longest wavelength of all the available laser systems in the market. By having a longer wavelength, this system is less likely to attract the pigment in the skin which is why this system is ideal for darker skin types. The Coolglide is considered the “Gold Standard” for darker skins since this 1064nm laser also has a built in cooling system for maximum epidermal safety. Lightsheer Laser           Coolglide Laser
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): IPL systems or Intensed Pulsed Light is also used for hair removal. IPL systems are light based systems which utilize multiple wavelengths of light as oppose to a laser which is one concentrated beam of light. Wavelengths vary from 700 to 1200 nm. IPL systems can be effective for hair removal, however, the results vary greatly depend on the type of IPL system used. There are only a few IPL systems which have been proven to generate a permanent result with consecutive treatments. The most popular is the Prowave 770 IPL system which has a programmable wavelength. Since various IPL systems are available with various degrees of effectiveness, it is best to go to a laser clinic which has lasers in addition to IPL systems since IPL systems have limitations depending on your skin type.

It is important to realize that not all lasers are suitable for all skin types. All lasers for hair removal function on the principle of attracting pigment and do not distinguish between pigment in the hair or in the skin which is why there definitely has to be a colour contrast between the skin and the hair.

Lasers which penetrate deeper into the follicle are less attracted to the pigment in the skin which is why an Nd Yag is the ideal laser for darker skin types. Darker skin types are safely and more effectively/aggressively treated with an Nd Yag since these lasers have a longer wavelength (1064NM) which means it avoids the colour in the skin more so than Diode lasers or early Alexandra lasers.

Nd Yag lasers can be used for all skin types however, they are less efficient and effective for lighter hairs. In order to guarantee the best results with fewest number of treatments, for lighter hairs and often times fair skin types, a diode laser may be recommended. For skin types I though IV with fine light hair, a diode laser will yield the best results.

At Bellair Laser Clinic we utilize 3 different laser technologies for hair removal depending on the individuals’ hair and skin type. Often times we will move an individual from one laser to another, depending on how the hair changes during the process of elimination, if it is beneficial to their treatment plan. There is no such thing as one laser that does it all. Most clinics are limited to one type of laser system. At Bellair Laser Clinic we have all types of technologies. This guarantees the best treatment results possible.
